The human-animal bonding is a prime example of unconditional love. This is an incredibly strong bond which shows that our pets offer love without judgement and unconditionally as well as comfort and we offer them the same. The human-animal bond can be made and made stronger by grooming, training and playing as well as so many other aspects of daily life with our animals. This bond is huge for our mental health and for theirs, whether they are working animals or a loving pet their bond with us (owners) is strong and will continue to grow stronger over time.

The love for hens is keenly felt by us as a charity, from over 40 volunteer teams across the country to our supporters who have helped us rehome over 927,000 hens since we first began! We’re moving towards our one-millionth hen saved, a true milestone for these animals and us. But we do more than just rehome hens; we are passionate about giving our feathered friends the best care possible, be it via our innovative world-first Poultry Vet Guide - for rolling out practical hen health to vets across the world - or education in schools and on a broader consumer level on the egg industry. We believe that help for hens should be available and accessible worldwide to improve welfare on a global scale to give these humble animals the respect they deserve.

The Human Animal Bond is such a special gift, if we allow ourselves to be available to it. Understanding the individual lived emotional experience of our companion animals especially, not only helps us be better caregivers to them but also allows us to see ourselves differently as well. The self grace and humility that this bond offers us really can help to support our physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Louise, founder of GADAB said "The reality is, as we get older, opportunities for companionship decline. Obviously, in a lot of scenarios people no longer work, their family may have grown and flown the nest, or they may not have a family. So, a lot of the social circles they would have moved in previously would have dwindled to various extents” explains Louise. “Having an animal in your environment can be a constant source of companionship. it’s nice to come home and there’s somebody waiting for you. That animal is always pleased to see you. They don’t judge you"

At the Pets Foundation, we believe the human-animal bond is a connection that brings immeasurable joy, companionship, and emotional support. We recognise the vital role pets play in the lives of countless individuals and families, and we're committed to fostering and protecting these special relationships. By supporting initiatives that keep pets and people together, we strive to create a world where every pet can thrive alongside their loving human companions.
One of the hardest things about fleeing an abusive relationship is leaving a pet behind. We awarded over £85,000 to Refuge4Pets, who help people escape domestic abuse, keeping their beloved pet sheltered and cared for until they’re safe again. It’s crucial to be able to reunite the pet with their owner, and plays a huge part in mental wellbeing and rehabilitation for both the owner and pet thanks to the human-animal bond.
Refuge4Pets told us about Diane’s story: “Diane had been hospitalised for nearly three months due to the injuries she sustained following a violent attack by her partner. While in hospital Diane disclosed the extent of abuse that she had experienced over decades. She has a dog, Angel who is her world and we were able to care for Angel while Diane was in hospital and following her discharge when she went into a refuge.
“When we first met Angel she was in very poor condition as the perpetrator had not allowed Diane to take her to the vet. We took her straight to the vet and she received the treatment she needed. Angel is doing really well in foster care and is now in much better health. We look forward to reuniting her with Diane when she is in permanent, safe accommodation.”

The UK is known as a nation of animal lovers, with over 60% of households having a companion animal. This works out at over 17 million households with a total of 34 million domestic animals within them. Every year in the UK, an estimated 2.1 million people aged 16 and over are subjected to some form of domestic abuse, alongside over 200,000 children. This means that there is a significant crossover between humans and companion animals being subjected to domestic abuse. The human-animal bond is especially important to both species within adverse circumstances - many survivors describe their animals as their only source of support during the abusive relationship and report them being a protective factor against suicidality. Research also indicates that the benefits of the human-animal bond within abusive situations is symbiotic in nature; with human and animal survivor aiding each other's resilience and ability to recover from trauma.
'Safeguarding Animal & Human Survivors of Sexual and Domestic Abuse' (SAHSDA) is an international guest speaking, training, research and consultancy organisation working to raise awareness of the link between abuse of animals and interpersonal abuse. We specialise in education on use of companion animals as a tactic of coercive control, animal sexual abuse as well as the use of animals within spiritual and ritual abuse. SAHSDA is committed to challenging and changing social and cultural norms which accept and perpetuate domestic abuse, including coercive control, and cruelty and neglect of animals. Our aim is to provide support and encourage professionals from across all sectors and disciplines, from pet professionals to social workers, to policing and wildlife crime officers, to be professionally curious, recognise the signs of abuse against animals and humans, and appreciate the link between them as well as understand their roles and responsibilities to safeguard and protect all survivors of abuse, regardless of species.

Donkey Assisted Activities, often referred to as DAA, can teach us how to read the language that donkeys use to communicate. It can teach us that our own behaviour affects others and how we can best adapt ourselves to situations to make others feel comfortable.
When spending time with donkeys at liberty, individuals are able to reflect on their own emotions and identify how they can develop skills to support achieving their own goals. Learning about donkeys - their intelligence, their behaviour, their history - opens people’s minds to the ability of animals to be partners with us on our individual journeys.
Our activities have The Donkey Sanctuary’s core values running throughout; working collaboratively, creatively and compassionately to develop mutually enriching relationships between donkeys and humans.
