It’s crucial to be able to reunite the pet with their owner, and plays a huge part in mental wellbeing and rehabilitation for both the owner and pet thanks to the human-animal bond.
Refuge4Pets told us about Diane’s story: “Diane had been hospitalised for nearly three months due to the injuries she sustained following a violent attack by her partner. While in hospital Diane disclosed the extent of abuse that she had experienced over decades. She has a dog, Angel who is her world and we were able to care for Angel while Diane was in hospital and following her discharge when she went into a refuge.
“When we first met Angel she was in very poor condition as the perpetrator had not allowed Diane to take her to the vet. We took her straight to the vet and she received the treatment she needed. Angel is doing really well in foster care and is now in much better health. We look forward to reuniting her with Diane when she is in permanent, safe accommodation.”

The UK is known as a nation of animal lovers, with over 60% of households having a companion animal. This works out at over 17 million households with a total of 34 million domestic animals within them. Every year in the UK, an estimated 2.1 million people aged 16 and over are subjected to some form of domestic abuse, alongside over 200,000 children. This means that there is a significant crossover between humans and companion animals being subjected to domestic abuse. The human-animal bond is especially important to both species within adverse circumstances - many survivors describe their animals as their only source of support during the abusive relationship and report them being a protective factor against suicidality. Research also indicates that the benefits of the human-animal bond within abusive situations is symbiotic in nature; with human and animal survivor aiding each other's resilience and ability to recover from trauma.
'Safeguarding Animal & Human Survivors of Sexual and Domestic Abuse' (SAHSDA) is an international guest speaking, training, research and consultancy organisation working to raise awareness of the link between abuse of animals and interpersonal abuse. We specialise in education on use of companion animals as a tactic of coercive control, animal sexual abuse as well as the use of animals within spiritual and ritual abuse. SAHSDA is committed to challenging and changing social and cultural norms which accept and perpetuate domestic abuse, including coercive control, and cruelty and neglect of animals. Our aim is to provide support and encourage professionals from across all sectors and disciplines, from pet professionals to social workers, to policing and wildlife crime officers, to be professionally curious, recognise the signs of abuse against animals and humans, and appreciate the link between them as well as understand their roles and responsibilities to safeguard and protect all survivors of abuse, regardless of species.
