The Human-Animal Bond

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), states that the Human-Animal Bond (HAB) is “a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that is influenced by behaviours that are essential to the health and well-being of both. This includes, but is not limited to, emotional, psychological, and physical interactions of people, animals, and the environment.”

The love and affection for animals is evident whether it is in our homes, at work or in a therapeutic environment. The HAB is of importance and holds meaning to anyone who has contact with animals, whatever species they may be.

StreetVet is one of many charities that witnesses this beneficial relationship and is one of the reasons that the National Human-Animal Bond Awareness Day (NHABAD) was created.

StreetVet is a national multi award-winning charity delivering free essential veterinary care and support to those experiencing homelessness with their pets across the UK, with the mission to keep owners and pets together wherever possible. Their staff and volunteers see firsthand how imperative it is to keep pets with their humans, as it provides them with a reason to live.

StreetVet was the founding charity behind the National Human-Animal Bond Awareness Day. The charity is able to provide free essential vet care for those experiencing homelessness due to the dedicated team of volunteer vets & nurses and a network of incredible fundraisers who believe in the Human-Animal Bond (HAB).

The HAB does not discriminate or judge, it is a feeling that does not depend on ability, worth or residential status. We want to promote those charities, organizations and individuals that harness and highlight the bond in whichever format they may use. The list of those utilizing the bond is long and we want to share their stories whether it is through equine therapy via Riding for the Disabled or raising a support dog that will be someone’s life partner.

The National Human-Animal Bond Awareness Day 2023 was hosted from Battersea. One talk was particularly heartfelt. Andy (pictured with his trusted companion Bailey) spoke openly with Dr. Sabrina Cohen-Hatton,

Firefighter and psychologist about their experiences of being homeless with canine companions by their side. Throughout his journey, Andy has always been very open in talking about his experience of homelessness, the challenges that homeless pet ownership brings and how he first met and grew to trust the StreetVet team who are privileged and delighted that Andy has agreed to take a more proactive role within StreetVet and help promote and protect the human animal bond.

Jade Statt

Co-Founder and Clinical Director of StreetVet/Co-Founder of NHABAD, Jade Statt believes: “Recognition of the importance of the human-animal bond is the foundation upon which StreetVet was created. I have been a vet for over 20 years yet some of the most incredible relationships I have had the privilege to witness have all been through StreetVet. We are so excited to have created a day dedicated to celebrating the power of pets.”

Tammie O’Leary

Co-founder of NHABAD and StreetVet volunteer says: “Many of us have, or have had, relationships with animals that are unique. The support animals provide us is truly powerful, emotionally, mentally and physically. The NHABAD is an opportunity to educate, interact, have fun and inspire people to understand more about each of the charities involved. Whether it’s Riding for the Disabled, PDSA, Support Dogs, Battersea Dog and Cats Home, or the British Hen Welfare Trust, each play an important role in the community. Having volunteered within the charity sector I see what a difference people donating time and skills can make. More people giving a little of their time will have such a positive impact on a charity. You also can make lifelong friends, animal or human.”
